As of January 1, 2015 the new Federal Regional Efficiency Standards will go into effect for air conditioners and heat pumps (split system and packages). This means that for Texas, as well as the rest of the South, there will be an elevation in the minimum energy efficiency rating allowed on newly manufactured air conditioning equipment. The current minimum is 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) which is being bumped up to 14 SEER.
What does this mean for you? Let’s go with the downside first. It will cost several more hundred dollars for you to replace your HVAC system next year after January 1st, 2015. The upside is you’ll have a more efficient AC system that will help reduce utility bills.
The goal for the Department of Energy (DOE) is to ensure that more efficient HVAC systems are installed, thereby making the U.S. less reliant on fossil fuel and other energy sources.
